Cruinneag III is the oldest yacht taking part in the 2011 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. The Bill Campbell-designed 62ft wooden ketch was launched in 1936 from the Dickies yard in Talbert, but never made an ocean crossing, going only as far as the Mediterranean.
Her skipper, Nick Christie, first sailed aboard her at just six months old, when his grandfather owned her. The family sold the yacht in the 1990s, but when the opportunity arose in 2008, Christie bought her back.
Having spend the past year cruising the Med and raising in classic regattas, Cruinneag III finally began her maiden ocean voyage in November, with Christie’s dog Dandy aboard.
